5 Simple Rules To Create A Calm Christmas Home (Even With Kids)

Calm Christmas Home

If you’re dreaming of a calm Christmas home this year — one that feels peaceful instead of overwhelming — it starts with a few intentional changes in how you decorate, store and organise your space.

In a recent survey, mums told me they want their homes to feel more:

  • Calm
  • Organised
  • Spacious
  • Relaxed
  • Proud to welcome guests

And the good news?
It is possible to create a magical and calm Christmas home — even with toys, guests, wrapping paper and real life happening around you.

Here’s how… without adding more stress (and with a few of my favourite Etsy finds along the way).

Choose calm, not clutter: Décor ideas for a calm Christmas home

More decorations don’t make a home more festive — they often just make it louder.

If your days already feel overstimulating, your Christmas décor should do the opposite: soften the space and create a feeling of peace when you walk in the room.

Look for styles that are:

Calm • Earthy • Soft • Timeless

Neutral or linen Christmas stockings

Wooden or clay ornaments

Dried orange + cinnamon garlands

Minimalist paper stars

Tiny ceramic houses for shelves or windowsills

💡Design tip: Pick one colour palette only
(example: cream + wood + green) and stick to it in every room. This instantly makes your home feel more cohesive and intentional.

Smart, hidden storage is one of the most powerful (and overlooked) foundations of a truly calm Christmas home.

Gift bags, toys, blankets, wrapping paper… it all ends up on the floor or dining table “just for now”.

Instead, choose storage that:

  1. Actually hides the mess
  2. Still looks beautiful in your space

Some of my favourite solutions from Etsy:

Lidded wicker baskets for blankets or toys

Wooden crates that slide under tables

Storage ottomans that double as seating

💡 Design tip: Always choose closed storage at Christmas. Open shelves are visual stress.

“A pouffe isn’t just for resting your feet — fill it with toys and blankets to keep them tucked out of sight.”

A calm Christmas home doesn’t mean removing the magic for children — it simply means creating clear, contained spaces for their fun.

Christmas doesn’t have to mean chaos. You can still create a magical experience for your children and protect your sanity & space.

Simple ways to contain the chaos:

  • A toy hammock for teddies & plushies
  • One beautiful wooden toy box (not 5 plastic tubs)
  • Festive labels for quick clean-ups
  • A small shelf for “Christmas books & puzzles”
  • A cosy play corner (tent, cushions, or mini play kitchen)

💡 Design tip: Instead of toys spreading everywhere, create one magic zone just for them. This teaches children where things belong — and keeps the rest of your home calmer.

Christmas layout tips for small & family homes

If the festive season has made you realise that your home needs better flow, storage and layout to become a true calm Christmas home.

Always follow these 5 rules:

  1. Never block walkways with decor
You should be able to walk through rooms without turning sideways.
  2. Keep at least 60cm walk paths
(Between sofa & tree, table & wall, etc.)
  3. Place the tree in the least-used corner
The tree is beautiful, but it shouldn’t steal your best seating or floor space.
  4. Use wall space, not floor space
Hang stars, wreaths, garlands and lights higher.
  5. Create ONE Christmas magic zone only
Not in every room — one main area is enough.

This is exactly how I plan layouts for my 3D design clients — and it’s the difference between “festive chaos” and “calm magic”.
